PEARL JAM STAR BACKS BATHROOM LAW

PEARL JAM rocker MIKE MCCREADY is lending his star power to a new bill calling for emergency access to toilets for sufferers of Crohn's disease. The guitarist - who himself has been diagnosed with the painful gastrointestinal disorder - testified before a legal committee in Washington on Thursday (29Jan09) in a bid to convince state legislators to allow patients with the condition to use shops' private restrooms.
MCCready claimed there are several businesses he now refuses to patronise after they refused him permission to use an employee toilet, causing "hundreds" of accidents over the last 20 years.
But while he acknowledged the illness has caused him embarrassment, he urged officials to remember the devastating humiliation younger people who have similar disorders must endure.
He said: "I'm 42 years old. I'm doing fine. But when you're 13 or 14 and you're going through those years with the shame and indignation - it's embarrassing...
"Imagine the worst diarrhoea you've ever had and then times it by 10, with a knife in it. You have maybe a half a second to find out where a bathroom is."

Yes!!! This is a great measure to protect our children. I work in a health food store, and when we moved our Gluten Free foods and created a Gluten Free Aisle, many adult customers really complained about having to go elsewhere in the (small)store to get a few of the items they like to buy. So many others (parents and children) were ecstatic because the children were able to shop for themselves and say "Mom, may I have that?" for the first time in their lives, without being overwhelmed with No's. It was very frustrating to see the healthy adults be so selfish when we explained to them why we chose to market the items in this manor, but the children were very excited. Children with allergy's and some who follow the SCD and other specialized diets still can't use many of the items there, but even for them it is a start. I hope the lawmakers can see past all this and push this through. Hopefully, now that Crohn's and UC are covered under the ADA we will see some action on this matter, that should be in place under the ADA already. This will be a great day for Crohnies like us, the children, and many others. Margie 11
