OPERA LEGEND SCHWARZKOPF DEAD AT 90

German opera legend ELISABETH SCHWARZKOPF has died at her home in Shruns, Austria. She was 90. The soprano was blessed with one of the greatest voices of the 20th century, according to opera experts. She retired in 1975 after a lengthy and acclaimed career on stage and screen, which was matched only by her great rival MARIA CALLAS. Her most famous leading roles included ELVIRA in MOZART's DON GIOVANNI and the MARSCHALLIN in STRAUSS' DER ROSENKAVALIER. Schwarzkopf's legacy was tarnished after her retirement when she admitted having applied to join the Nazi Party in 1939 - to further her singing career.
