OASIS NAMED BEST BRITISH BAND AT NME AWARDS

Mancunian group Oasis have been named the best British band at the Shockwaves NME awards.

The Dig Out Your Soul stars led the way at this year's ceremony at Brixton Academy, with seven nominations, but were only succesful in the best band category, losing out for best live band, best album and best video.

Having won the best international band and album prizes at last week's Brit awards, US rockers Kings of Leon were up for four NME awards, and won the best international album prize for Only By The Night, while the Killers were named best international band.

Muse were the biggest winners at the 2009 ceremony, with three awards including best live band and best album artwork.

Frontman Matt Bellamy also had personal reason to celebrate, having been named sexiest male.

MGMT were named best new band and took the best track award for Time to Pretend while US pop-rock trio the Jonas Brothers picked up an unenviable double, winning worst band and worst album.

Glastonbury won best festival with the recently-closed Astoria named best venue, US president Barack Obama winning hero of the year and his predecessor George Bush winning the villain award for the sixth consecutive year.

Comedian and Mock the Week panellist Mark Watson hosted the awards, which were opened by Mercury prize winners Elbow.

Other performances on the night came from White Lies, Friendly Fires, Glasvegas, Franz Ferdinand and the Cure, who received the Godlike Geniuses award.
