OASIS AND KINGS OF LEON GEAR UP FOR NME AWARDS

The cream of the music world will assemble in south London later today for the Shockwaves NME awards.

British band Oasis are leading the way at this year's ceremony at Brixton Academy, with seven nominations, including best band, best live band, best album and best video.

Having won the best international band and album prizes at last week's Brit awards, US rockers Kings of Leon are up for four NME awards, including best live band and best track for Sex on Fire.

Two of Oasis's seven nominations come from songwriter Noel Gallagher, who is up against US president Barack Obama for hero of the year, as well as being named in the best dressed category.

"Seven nominations, you say? Is that all? I always knew my time would come in the best dressed man in the world category," Gallagher said when the nominations were announced.

Comedian and Mock the Week panellist Mark Watson is to host the awards, which will be opened by Mercury prize winners Elbow.

Other performances on the night will come from White Lies, Friendly Fires, Glasvegas, Franz Ferdinand and the Cure, who are to receive the Godlike Geniuses award.
