NEW STRUMMER FOOTAGE SHOWS ESTABLISHMENT UPBRINGING

New footage of the late THE CLASH frontman JOE STRUMMER's privileged upbringing has been unearthed and featured in a new movie about the rocker's life. Directed by JULIAN TEMPLE, JOE STRUMMER: THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN, includes photographs and short films of Strummer - real name JOHN MELLOR - in his youth visiting his diplomat father RONALD, in places like Cairo, Berlin and Tehran, and as a teenager at boarding school with his best friend. The documentary was premiered last night (20JAN07) at the American Sundance Film Festival, and also features new interviews with BONO of U2, Hollywood star JOHNNY DEPP, and film-maker MARTIN SCORSESE. Temple says, "Joe, mainly because of his father being a diplomat, was always very open to different cultures. "He was politically to the left but had no prejudices about others with different views." Strummer died of a heart attack aged 50 at his home in Somerset, England, in December 2002.
