MORE AWARDS SUCCESS FOR OSCAR HOPEFUL SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Slumdog Millionaire has added to its haul of awards after winning four prizes at the Richard Attenborough Film awards.

Danny Boyle's film - which won four Golden Globes earlier this month - was named film of the year, with Boyle winning the director's prize and teenage actor Dev Patel claiming the rising star award.

Patel, who previously starred in E4 series Skins, also won the British Breakthrough Star prize, in a new People's Choice award.

"I have been absolutely amazed by the sheer scale and scope of the reaction to this film and I want to thank everyone for their support," the 18-year-old said.

In the People's Choice categories, The Dark Knight was named film of the year and won the film score award while Mamma Mia! took the best British film prize.

The main categories are voted for by regional film critics across the UK and saw Kate Winslet picking up another best actress prize, for The Reader.

"I am thrilled to have been honoured by this group of critics whose contribution to the world of cinema throughout the UK is invaluable and which too often goes unrecognised," the 33-year-old actress commented.

Mickey Rourke won the best actor prize, for The Wrestler, while Martin McDonagh was named best screenwriter, for black comedy In Bruges.
