MIAMI VICE SINKS PIRATES AT US BOX OFFICE

The big screen remake of 1980s iconic TV show MIAMI VICE finally toppled blockbuster PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST for the top spot at the US box office. The gritty cop drama took in $25.2 million (GBP14 million) in its first week in release, knocking the JOHNNY DEPP movie into second place with $20.5 million (GBP11.4 million), after three weeks in the number one position. Pirates posted the biggest opening weekend of all time and has a total box office takes of $358.4 million (GBP199 million). Teen comedy JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE, starring former DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star JESSE METCALFE, debuted in third place with a respectable $14 million (GBP7.8 million). THE ANT BULLY, an animated family film featuring the voices of MERYL STREEP, JULIA ROBERTS and NICOLAS CAGE, opened in fifth place with a disappointing $8.1 million (GBP4.5 million). Quirky independent film LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, starring GREG KINNEAR and STEVE CARRELL, opened strongly in limited release, taking in $356,863 (GBP198,000) in only seven theatres in New York City and Los Angeles.
