MEADOWS RECEIVES SPECIAL JURY AWARD IN ROME
British film director SHANE MEADOWS has been awarded the Special Jury prize at the inaugural Rome Film Festival for THIS IS ENGLAND. Meadows' movie is set in 1983 and follows the life of a 12-year-old boy who befriends a gang of skinheads. The film-maker says, "I thank the jury because the subject matter of the film is not something easy to vote for." This Is England lost out on the Best Film prize to Russian movie PLAYING THE VICTIM, directed by KIRILL SEREBRENNIKOV. France's ARIANE ASCARIDE was honoured as Best Actress for her role in ROBERT GUEDIGUIAN's ARMENIA, while Italian GIORGIO COLANGELI was chosen as Best Actor for his part in L'ARIA SALATA (THE SALT AIR).
