MASSIVE ATTACK PRODUCER DOLLAR DIES
Record producer JONNY DOLLAR, who worked on MASSIVE ATTACK's seminal 1991 album BLUE LINES, has died of cancer at the age of 45.
The music pioneer was diagnosed with the disease in 2008 but lost his battle last week (29May09) at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.
Dollar was credited with helping to define the trip-hop genre, and worked with Neneh Cherry and Gabrielle on her three-times platinum album Rise.
Polydor president Ferdy Unger-Hamilton paid tribute to the studio genius, saying: "When I first heard (Blue Lines single) Unfinished Sympathy like everybody else who heard it, I don’t think I could really believe what I was hearing.
"As a fan of these records it was a natural thing for me to call him up when we were looking for a producer for Gabrielle's third album, Rise. As committed and driven a producer as I've ever met, I literally had to take the tracks by force back off him, he was so determined to make them perfect. The result was a Number One single and album, (both called) Rise. He was as tough artistically as he was gentle a person."
Dollar leaves behind a wife and four children. He will be buried in a private family funeral in Cornwall, south west England, with a memorial ceremony in London to follow.
