MALKOVICH DECLINES STARRING ROLE ON BROADWAY
Actor JOHN MALKOVICH has turned down an offer to star in a Broadway production of THE GOOD CANARY - because he'd rather spend more time with his family.
Malkovich admits he's in talks to direct the New York theatre version of the play - about a novelist whose wife suffers from mental problems - which he's already helmed in Paris, France and Mexico.
But the star insists he'd cast another actor to take the lead in the Broadway show, because taking on a rigorous starring role would be unfair to his family.
He tells the New York Post, "I just turned down a Broadway play. Look, I haven't lived in New York (for) over 20 years. I live in Massachusetts."
Instead, Malkovich's clan will join him in Austria this summer (09) for a family getaway as he undertakes a new play.
He adds, "I have kids at home who don't want to leave their friends and move, except they will when I'm in Vienna this summer doing The Infernal Comedy. They'll come because they love the sausage. I live a quiet life in a very relaxed place. We don't go out much. One son's in Cambridge, my 16-year-old's a junior in high school. I'm involved with their schooling. This is probably my son's last year at home."
