MADEA BEATS JONAS BROTHERS TO US NUMBER ONE
Family comedy Madea Goes to Jail has held on to the top spot at the US box office despite the release of Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.
The Disney film had been widely expected to top the charts after a 3D concert film featuring Miley Cyrus and her alter ego Hannah Montana took $31.1 million (£21.8 million) in its opening weekend last year.
But while the film of the sibling trio's live show took $12.7 million (£8.9 million) in its first three days in US cinemas, Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail earned $16.5 million (£11. million) to retain the number one spot.
Following its eight Oscars last weekend, Slumdog Millionaire enjoyed the biggest increase in post-Academy awards box office business since Titanic with $12.2 million (£8.6 million) after it was introduced to more screens across the US.
Taken and He's Just Not That Into You both fell one place each while Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, the only other new release in the US, earned $4.7 million (£3.3 million) to debut in eighth.
The top ten films in the US are: (last week's position)
