MABIUS DEFENDS BECKHAM

UGLY BETTY star ERIC MABIUS has leaped to the defence of maligned style queen VICTORIA BECKHAM, urging the media to "leave her alone". The Spice Girl provoked a barrage of press abuse when her reality TV show Victoria Beckham: Coming To America aired in the U.S. and U.K. earlier this month (Jul07). The show, which documented her move to Los Angeles with husband David and their children, was branded "an orgy of self-indulgence" and its star "relentlessly self-promoting" by the New York Post alone. Meanwhile, scrutiny of Beckham's weight and jibes at her sour-faced expressions have dominated British tabloids and magazines for years. But Mabius, who is set to be Beckham's co-star when she guests on fashion series Ugly Betty soon, can't understand the bad press. He tells Us Weekly online, "She catches a lot of flak in the press in England, and I don't know why exactly, because she's a very eloquent, highly functioning, brilliant woman. "I went to the UK Glamour awards so I spent a little bit of time with her, and she couldn't have been sweeter and more well-spoken - just cool."
