LUMLEY THREATENS TO QUIT BRITAIN

Actress JOANNA LUMLEY has threatened to quit Britain if former Nepalese Gurkha soldiers lose their battle to stay in the country.
The Indian-born British actress, whose father fought alongside the Gurkhas in the British army, has pledged her support to hundreds of former Nepalese Gurkha soldiers as they began their legal fight over settlement rights.
But Lumley claims she will hand back her British passport and become an Indian national if the veteran soldiers lose their battle.
She says, "There is something wrong here. If they don't put it right I think there will be hell to pay. I feel so strongly about this.
"If this should go wrong for the Gurkhas I'm prepared to hand back my British passport and I'll take up Indian nationality.
"I was born in India; I had to pay to belong to this country. I was a British subject but not a citizen. If they despise them so much then they can despise me."

When my daughter (28) was 21 we visited York for a Dad and Daughter weekend. This weekend they were commemorating the Battle of Kohima and stood alone outside York Minster was a retired Ghurka in full uniform. I discretly pointed him out to my daughter and he saw me do this and waved us over. He was very emotional to see that a 21 year old girl held him in such awe and demonstated such respect. I am ashamed that out country has let these people down after the service they have given us. They deserve our respect and thanks for the service given and our support after they leave the army. Our own soldiers also should have respect both while serving and after injury or retirement - this is also sadly lacking. My son aged 25 has now left this country as he feels he can no longer respect his birthplace. How sad.
