LOREN PLEADS FOR CLEANER NAPLES
Italian actress SOPHIA LOREN has issued an emotive plea to the people of Naples, begging them to help put a stop to the growing amount of garbage littering the city's streets.
The veteran star is reported to be so upset by the sight of the messy streets she has been moved to tears by the "tragedy".
And she's resorted to making a personal appeal to urge the Italian city's residents to make an effort to clean up.
She says, "I beg you, with my hands clasped in prayer, to multiply efforts to remedy to this tragedy.
"I look at this tragedy with deep anguish in my heart... Cooperate! Make an effort! This is our problem."
Naples and the surrounding Campania region has been struggling with the garbage problem since December (07), when collectors stopped taking the trash because the dumps were already full. Locals have reportedly protested against new dumps and have resorted to burning their household waste and dumping it in the countryside.
