LEWIS SLIPS UP DURING TELETHON

Funnyman JERRY LEWIS caused controversy during his 42nd annual Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon on Monday (03Sep07) when he called a family member an "illiterate faggot". The comedian was in the 17th hour of his 22-hour TV stint when he seemed to forget the show was airing live across America. Immediately realising he'd said something he shouldn't have,Lewis quickly changed the subject and attempted to press on with the televised fundraiser. Despite the slip-up, Lewis' MDA telethon went on to raise a record $63 million (GBP31.5 million) - $3 million (GBP1.5 million) more than last year's (06) total. Lewis' annual TV charity drive has now raised more than $1.45 billion since the telethons started in 1966.

I live in Tucson, the home of MDA and I'm gay. While I have heard excuses that he was tired when he stated this homophobic remark the fact of the matter is that when one is tired they say what they think. I've worked for MDA in the past and volunteered for them even further back and I will never do so again. It's time for Jerry to be removed as spokesperson now and I call on each and every gay person and GLBT organization to boycott MDA and the Jerry Lewis Telethon financially until this homophobic old has been is removed as spokesperson.
