LEWIS LAUNCHES ATTACK ON LAURIE

DAMIAN LEWIS has launched a scathing attack on fellow British actor HUGH LAURIE - insisting he's not the only Brit to find success in the U.S.
Lewis - who starred in 2001 war series Band of Brothers - is amazed by the amount of publicity the House star has garnered since the medical show began in 2004, because he believes Laurie isn't alone in carving out a career in Hollywood.
He says, "English actors have been successful on U.S. TV for years. Hugh is not the first to be successful in LA and he will certainly not be the last."

How exactly is Damian Lewis's one sentence inocuous statement a 'scathing attack' on Hugh Laurie? He's just stating fact. US television audiences have always had our favorite British actors and actresses and always will. Hugh Laurie is our current favorite. He's smart and funny and very likeable. We like Damian Lewis too. So what? I doubt that Mr. Lewis meant to be offensive. The media is just blowing this way out of proportion.

Damian Lewis & Hugh Laurie happen to be friends, according to previous interviews with Lewis. I'm sure Mr. Lewis was not intending to insult his friend as much as he was trying to emphasize the fact that great British actors have been appearing in quality US television programs for years. Hugh Laurie is awesome, but the US media HAS really been making it out as if Laurie were the first successful actor from across the pond to set foot upon our shores. I'm sure that's been frustrating for other British television actors who were/have been working here, successfully, before Laurie. It's not HIS fault, of course. I'm saying it's the media's, and I think that is what Mr. Lewis was trying to get across.
