LEDGER'S POSTHUMOUS ACTING HONOUR AT AUSSIE PRIZEGIVING
HEATH LEDGER was posthumously honoured by the Australian Film Institute (AFI) on Saturday (06Dec08) when the tragic star was awarded the international prize for best actor for his role as THE JOKER in BATMAN movie THE DARK KNIGHT.
The late actor's family collected the prestigious gong in his honour at Melbourne's Princess Theater, where guests gave a standing ovation after Ledger was announced as the winner for his terrifying take on the film baddie.
In a moving tribute, Ledger's sister Kate fought back tears, telling the audience, "It has been without a doubt the most difficult year, losing such a loved family member.
"We are so proud of him and humbly accept this award on behalf of his beautiful daughter (Matilda) who we will cherish forever."
The AFI board also commended the star's talents: "He was the untamed spirit many of us wish we could be. May the legend live on."
Ledger, who died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in New York in January (08), was also named as GQ magazine's Best Actor in November (08).
Aussie actress Cate Blanchett won the AFI's gong for Best Actress for her turn in Elizabeth: The Golden Age at the event.
