LAURYN HILL ALBUM DEAL IN JEOPARDY?

Singer LAURYN HILL's record deal is "inactive" - after her label boss concedes she will never have an album as successful as her former group THE FUGEES. The hip-hop star hasn't released a solo album since 2002's MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 - and Columbia Records senior manager Kyambo 'hip Hop' Joshua admits he doesn't know when the follow-up will be. He says, "Her deal is borderline inactive, though I'm sure they want to do an album. But when you sign an act in another era, with a deal based on the act being a superstar, things can change (years later). "These days, even if you do great numbers, they will likely not be Fugees numbers. So, I have to see what direction she and her people would like to take and what they'd like to do." The Fugees split in 1997 - but briefly got back together in 2004.

For those of you who are true Lauryn Hill fans, let me point you to the lyric in the MTV version of her song, I Find it Hard to Say, where she sings, "we must distroy in order to rebuild." Throughout that song she says "REBEL." Although that was written about Amadu Dialo, the unarmed man who was shot 41 times by New York police, I believe Ms. Hill is trying to distroy "Lauryn," as we once knew her, and who industry, with our unknowing support, just won't let her grow. If a person is not growing, they are dying. If you really love her then let's support her in her effort to move beyond the kind of music she did before. She doesn't want to make the beats for the streets, she wants to sing about the human condition in a more intelligent, slower and methodical way. I heard a sample of her new song, Guarding the Gates and I got it. I understand.
