KLAXONS TOP NME POLLS
London band Klaxons have made history after winning the best track and best album awards in NME magazine's end of year polls.
The Mercury Prize winners' debut album Myths of the Near Future - named after a collection JG Ballard short stories - was voted the best album of 2007, ahead of releases from Radiohead, Arcade Fire and Arctic Monkeys.
And the nu-rave band's 1980s-influenced single Golden Skans was voted the best track of the year.
James Righton, the band's keyboardist and co-vocalist said he was "absolutely ecstatic" at the result.
"We didn't want to be another post-Libertines band singing about London and playing chords," he told NME.
"We didn't want to be a po-faced, dull band - we wanted to have fun."
Klaxons began the year as the headline act on NME's indie rave tour, but a Mercury Prize win, numerous festival appearances and a budding romance between guitarist Simon Taylor and CSS lead singer Lovefoxxx has capped a remarkable 2007 for the four-piece.
"The lists this year go from the mainstream to more specialised and really show how rich the output of music in 2007 has been," NME reviews editor Julian Marshall told the BBC.
"Now we're gearing up for what 2008 has to offer."
The top five albums of 2007 were:
Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends
