KAPOOR: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE IS WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS
Anil Kapoor has put the success of Slumdog Millionaire down to a public desire for a break from depressing news stories.
As well as earning multiple Golden Globes and Baftas, Danny Boyle's film has enjoyed a lengthy run in the top ten of both the UK and US box office charts, with a positive word-of-mouth reaction among critics and fans alike.
Speaking after the Mumbai-set drama claimed four Bafta awards, Bollywood veteran Kapoor explained much of the film's success is due to Simon Beaufoy's "absolutely phenomenal script".
"It's the story of an underdog, a great love story - it's like a combination of Rocky meeting Gone With the Wind or Titanic!" he told inthenews.co.uk.
"The best part of the love story is that it has a happy ending and that's what the world needs," Kapoor added.
"There's recession and depression and suddenly a film comes along that is very gritty and real but still has a happy ending."
Slumdog Millionaire is nominated for ten Oscars at the upcoming Academy Awards.
