Angelina Jolie has confessed her surprise at her latest film being given a 12A rating due to the level of violence in some scenes.

The 32-year-old actress is currently starring in the big screen version of Beowulf as a monster's mother who wreaks revenge for her son's death.

"I think it's remarkable that it has the rating it has," she told reporters at the film's British premiere in London last night.

"It's quite an extraordinary film and some of it shocked me."

The film used high-tech computer graphics to capture the actors' movements before animating them.

In some scenes Jolie is shown as a seductive temptress in the nude and she insisted that the techniques used to blend real scenes with animation is "amazing and very creative".

The filming of Beowulf, the legendary Nordic tale of a hero fighting monsters, attracted more than just Jolie's A-list name, with Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins and John Malkovich also starring in the Robert Zemeckis-directed film.

Commenting on Winstone, who plays the hero Beowulf, Jolie said he was "amazing" to work with.

"I want to do something else with him soon because he's so much fun," she added.

Beowulf opens in UK cinemas on Friday November 16th.
