JOHNNY MARR PLANNING 'MAVERICKS' LECTURE AT SALFORD UNI

Ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has announced his first lecture as a visiting professor of music at the University of Salford.

The 43-year-old will discuss "mavericks" and "innovators" at his debut lecture on November 4th.

Marr's appointment to the Mancunian university was announced a year ago, with the guitarist offering a series of workshops and masterclasses to students taking the BA Popular Music and Recording degree.

After the Smiths split in 1987, Marr formed Electronic with New Order frontman Bernard Sumner and recently joined US indie rockers Modest Mouse, after a planned guest spot on their album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank grew into full membership of the band.

John Sweeney from the university's school of media, music and performance added Marr was "a revered guitarist and composer", held "in the highest esteem by many of his fellow performers".

"His lecture is a tremendous opportunity for our students and the wider public to benefit from his considerable experience and expertise," he added.

"It promises to be a really special event."
