JARVIS COCKER: TALENT SHOWS ARE TALENTLESS

Former PULP singer JARVIS COCKER has slammed TV talent shows which he claims continually produce talentless 'stars'.

The spindly COMMON PEOPLE singer said shows such as POP IDOL and X FACTOR seem to produce winners who never have "good voices", with contestants getting through only if their voices had no personality.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Jarvis also slammed the current trend for warbling an arpeggio on every note, claiming judges and producers on the show only picked people "who show off how many notes they can fit into a ten-second period".

"A great voice expresses something and gives you some idea of the personality behind the voice. There's zero personality in the voices of any of the people who sing on these shows," he said.

Jarvis, who with Pulp was one of the biggest stars of the Britpop revolution in the 90s, claimed that he would be straight out in a similar talent show.

And he added that the idea of pop music is changing. "The pop charts used to be where everything happened. Now the most interesting stuff is happening outside in the independent music sector," he said.

Tell you what, I'd rather sit in a room and be judged musically by Jarvis than some Fella with pants up to his chest whilst I stood on a big red "X" squeeking-out Whitney's and Brittany's. Jarvis has influenced ( and still does) the Generations, but he shoulders the responsibility correctly. I reckon the best Artists unfortunatley get over-looked because it's hard chasing recognition and getting to be in the right place at the right time...standing outside for 10 hours to be told you don't have the Putty Factor won't ever do It for me or a load of Other (really talented) people I've discussed this with. We need an alternative, like an Anti-Cheese Talent Call to bring us kicking and screaming into the Spotlight: real grit, real people, real stories, real music. It's been ages since someone Ace-enough has given that to the Music World and we all know who He is don't we? In short, I agree with Jarvis!
