INDY GRABS UK BOX OFFICE CROWN WITH £12.2M OPENING

Indiana Jones' revival has been as successful in the UK as expected, with £12.2 million in UK box office receipts in its first three days on release.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has debuted in the number one spot at the UK and Ireland box office, echoing its success across the globe.

Despite some mixed reviews, the fourth film in the franchise has given director Steven Spielberg his biggest global opening ever, with $311 million (£157 million) taken worldwide in five days.

And according to figures released by box office monitor Media by Numbers, Harrison Ford's return as the adventurous archaeologist was as well received in the UK as in cinemas around the world, easily claiming the number one spot.

Last week's number three film, What Happens in Vegas… climbed to second spot, but was still markedly less popular than Indiana Jones' comeback, taking just £921,516 last weekend.

Last week's number one, comic book movie Iron Man, fell to third, while the majority of the top ten each dropped one rung.

Only Lebanese drama Caramel held firm, retaining ninth position, while Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson dropped two places with In Bruges.

The top ten films at the UK box office are: (last week's position)

1 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - £12.2m (-)
