HIP-HOP MATRIARCHS HEAD PANEL FOR SINGLE MUMS

The mothers of top rap artists COMMON, MOS DEF and TALIB KWELI are teaming up to run a workshop in New York to provide single mums with tips on how to raise young black sons.
Dr. Mahalia A. Hines, mother of rapper/actor Common, Dr. Brenda Greene, Talib Kweli's mum, and Mos Def's matriarch Sheron Smith will head a discussion in the Bronx on Saturday (11Jul09) to help fellow mums keep their kids out of trouble.
The workshop, entitled Saving Our Sons, will focus on how to ensure single mothers of black and Latino kids can persuade their offspring to remain in school and stay away from inner-city gang culture.
The trio will be joined by teachers, parents and grandparents from the community for sessions that will also deal with fatherhood, anger management and encounters with law enforcement.
