HINDUS CALL FOR LOVE GURU INDIAN BAN
Leading Hindu groups are urging film bosses not to release MIKE MYERS' comedy flop THE LOVE GURU in India for fear of riots on the streets.
Officials at the Universal Society of Hinduism, who spearheaded a Hindu boycott of the film in America, have joined with other leading groups to call for a nationwide ban on the movie, claiming funnyman Myers mocks the religion in the film.
There are no immediate plans to release the movie in India - and officials insist it's best left that way.
USH leader Rajan Zed says, "The film is reportedly yet to be submitted for certification with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the body responsible for certifying films suitable for public exhibition in India.
"If it is released there, Hindu leaders have declared they will intensify their protest movement... because the film clearly denigrates Hinduism and its sacred concepts.
"Groups like the Hindu Alliance of India, Shri Ramayan Pracharini Sabha, and India Heritage Panel, who have already expressed their resentment against the movie in the past, are also waiting and watching for the release.
"According to reports, a Hindu group has given a memorandum against the movie to Goa Chief Minister and movie theatre owners and one major theatre owner even declared that he would not screen it."
Zed is claiming a huge victory in America insisting his group's opposition to the film, which it called "vulgar and obscene", led to many filmgoers boycotting the movie on religious grounds.
He adds, "It wasn't just Hindus who stayed away - Catholics, Jews and other groups also found the essence of the film distasteful. We were supported by many other religious groups."
