HEPBURN DRESS SELLS FOR £410,000

The iconic black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's was sold today for £410,000.

Auctioneers Christie's had put a reserve price on the Givenchy dress of £70,000 but as bidding began it soon became clear that the amount would far exceed that.

Telephone bids as well as offers from bidders at the auction house rose consistently until the hammer finally fell on an offer of £470,000, with £60,000 going on buyer's fees.

The dress was donated by the previous owners, Monsieur and Madame Lapierre, who themselves were handed the dress by Hubert de Givenchy.

Proceeds will be given to the charity City of Joy Aid, which benefits the underprivileged in India.

Iconic goods from other films were also up for sale this afternoon, including some 60 weapons from a variety of James Bond films over the past four decades, some of which were handled by the actors playing 007.

For those with a penchant for horrendous woolly jumpers, then the jumper Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth) wears in Bridget Jones' Diary was also up for grabs, and Harry Potter fans could get their hands on a programme for the quidditch world cup final.
