HAPPY MONDAYS SINGER FACES SMOKING FINE

HAPPY MONDAYS singer SHAUN RYDER is facing a GBP50 ($100) fine after he openly flouted a smoking ban at a concert in Manchester, England last Saturday (07Jul07). The reformed British group was playing at The Ritz when Ryder lit up several cigarettes on stage, breaking the new law which came into force on 1 July (07), banning smoking in all enclosed public places. Local councillor Pat Karney says, "The Ritz will get a visit from environmental health straight away. "No matter how big he thinks he is, he is not above the law. There will be no breaches of this law in Manchester." But the venue's manager, Stuart Green, has denied any wrongdoing, insisting staff had adequately enforced the no-smoking law.
