HAPPY MONDAYS HELP FUND WILSON'S CANCER TREATMENT
HAPPY MONDAYS star SHAUN RYDER is using the group's comeback to help fund mentor TONY WILSON's cancer treatment.
Music mogul Wilson, who was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2006, gave Ryder and his band their big break when he signed them to his label Factory Records.
And now the Step Off singer is hoping to repay his former boss by helping raise the necessary cash to pay for Wilson's $7,000 (GBP3,500) per month cancer treatment.
According to British newspaper The Guardian, Wilson was refused aid from the National Health Service because Sutent, the drug he is using to boost his life expectancy, is merely a trial treatment and there is not enough demonstrable evidence to support its use in treating kidney cancer.
Wilson has been forced to buy the drug privately and friends like Ryder and his bandmates have set up a fund to help him cover costs.
The former music mogul says, "I'm the only person in this industry who famously has never made any money. I used to say some people make money and some make history, which is very funny until you find you can't afford to keep yourself alive."
