GEORGE MICHAEL GIVEN 100 HOURS COMMUNITY SERVICE
George Michael has been given 100 hours community service and been banned from driving for two years at Brent magistrates court today.
The star had pleaded guilty to driving while unfit and avoided jail in a sentencing hearing with magistrate Katherine Marshall.
He was arrested in October 1st 2006 after being found slumped over his steering wheel in his car during the early hours of the morning.
Michael is due to play two shows at Wembley Stadium this weekend and arrived at court in a dark suit and sunglasses.
The 43-year-old was told in court today that he would avoid jail and that the magistrate was considering either community service or a suspended sentence.
He stood on the steps when leaving court and smiled while he waited for reporters to stop asking questions.
"I would simply ask people to understand that the media coverage of this case has been farcical," the singer said.
"Now I'm off to do the biggest show [Wembley Stadium tonight and tomorrow] of my life."
The former Wham! star is set to embark on a European tour of his greatest hits this summer, playing sold-out shows in a number of countries.
