GABRIEL PAYS TRIBUTE TO MURDERED ACTIVIST
British singer PETER GABRIEL has paid tribute to murdered Chechen human rights activist NATALIA ESTEMIROVA at a gig in Wiltshire, England on Saturday night (25Jul09).
Estemirova, a prominent campaigner in Chechnya, was abducted and murdered in the country's capital Grozny, earlier this month (15Jul09).
Gabriel collaborated with Estemirova on several movie projects in conjunction with his human rights charity Witness.
And the star used his appearance at the World of Music Arts and Dance (Womad) festival to praise his late pal's tireless activism.
He flashed a giant picture of Estemirova up on the big screens behind him and dedicated his track Biko to her.
The song was written about South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko who died in police custody in the 1970s.
Gabriel, who founded the Womad event in 1980, hoped to raise thousands of dollars across the festival weekend (25-26Jul09) for his Witness organisation.
