FRANKIE LAINE DIES

Veteran singer FRANKIE LAINE has died in a San Diego, California hospital. He was 93. Lane, best known for singing the theme from classic TV western series RAWHIDE, suffered a heart attack following hip replacement surgery. He passed away yesterday (06FEB07) at Scripps Mercy Hospital. Laine's other hits included JEZEBEL, I BELIEVE, MULE TRAIN, COLD WATER and ANSWER ME. Born Frank LoVecchio in Chicago, Illinois on 30 March 1913, Laine had his first hit in 1947, going on to enjoy a career in which he sold 250 million albums and was awarded 21 gold records. In 1974, Laine sang the theme to MEL BROOKS' comedy western BLAZING SADDLES. Laine is survived by his second wife MARCIA ANN KLINE, who he married in 1999, his brother, two daughters and two grandsons.
