FOLK ICON TRAVERS DIES

Folk legend MARY TRAVERS, part of popular musical trio PETER, PAUL AND MARY, has died. She was 72.
The singer lost her battle with leukaemia on Wednesday (16Sep09) at the Danbury Hospital in Connecticut.
Travers joined forces with Peter Yarrow and Noel 'Paul' Stookey in the early 60s and they became hugely successful for their easy-listening style.
The band's most famous releases include Leaving on a Jet Plane and Puff (The Magic Dragon), and they picked up five Grammy Awards throughout their career.
Travers' version of If I Had A Hammer was used as an anthem for racial equality in the 1960s.
She is survived by her fourth husband, Ethan Robbins; two daughters, a sister and two grandchildren.
