FERRY APOLOGISES FOR NAZI COMMENTS

Singer Bryan Ferry has apologised "unreservedly" for his comments to a German newspaper when he called the Nazis "amazing".

While speaking to the newspaper Welt Am Sonntag, the former Roxy Music frontman said the Nazis "knew how to put themselves in the limelight".

He continued: "Leni Riefenstahl's movies, Albert Speer's buildings, the mass parades and the flags - just amazing. Really beautiful."

The 61-year-old singer also acknowledged that he calls his studio in west London the "Fuhrerbunker".

Both Leni Riefenstahl and Albert Speer were close to Adolf Hitler and the hierarchy of the Nazi party.

However in a statement released on his behalf the Marks and Spencer (M&S) model said: "I apologise unreservedly for any offence caused by my comments on Nazi iconography, which were solely made from an art history perspective."

"I, like every right-minded individual, find the Nazi regime, and all it stood for, evil and abhorrent," he added.

Many commentators had called for M&S to withdraw its contract with the singer over the remarks but the firm is remaining tight-lipped.

"We do not comment on the private views expressed by our models. We chose him because he is a style icon," a M&S spokesperson said.
