FERGUSON'S SUICIDE AGONY

Talk show host CRAIG FERGUSON planned on killing himself during a low period in his life - but a chance encounter with a friend saved him from suicide.
The Scotsman fought alcohol addiction for years in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but his drink binges left him depressed.
And Ferguson, who tells all about his booze battle in forthcoming book America On Purpose, admits he almost took his own life on Christmas Day in 1991 when he woke up to find himself in a London bar covered in his own vomit and urine.
He writes, “I felt worse than I ever had... I was a drunk, a loser and a disaster as a human being... The shame was immense. It pushed down on me like a terrible weight.”
Ferguson decided to kill himself by jumping into the Thames river - but he ran into a friend who cheered him up and inadvertently saved his life.
The experience was a wake-up call for the comedian, who vowed sobriety just six weeks after the ordeal.
And he's adamant that period in his life has helped shape the person he has become: “Failure is not a disgrace. It’s just a pitch that you missed, and you’d better get ready for the next one.”
