FANS PROTEST GAY DISCRIMINATION ON AS THE WORLD TURNS
Fans of AS THE WORLD TURNS have launched a campaign against the U.S. soap opera, claiming the producers portray a pair of gay lovers differently than heterosexual couples on the show. In a recent Valentine's Day (14Feb08) episode of the show, gay couple Luke and Noah were the only two characters who didn't kiss - prompting fans to protest the restriction on physical contact between the pair, who have only been showed hugging since they got together last September (07). But Damon Romine of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD) has commended the show for its "thoughtful writing of both characters' individual journeys", noting that "Luke and Noah's relationship is the first gay male love story portrayed on daytime in 60 years". Jeannie Tharrington, a spokeswoman for As The World Turns, says, "Everybody at (the show) is committed to this groundbreaking story line. "(Since it started) we've heard from a lot of people - some of whom like it, some of whom don't. We want to tell the story the best way we can, and also want to be respectful of all the people who watch the show."

What is most incomprehensible about the obvious censorship of the Luke/Noah storyline
is that the show, CBS and P&G (the sponsors)are working against their own interest.
The Luke/Noah story is almost singlehandedly responsible for the show moving from
7th to 3rd in ratings, and the amount of mainstream media publicity has been phenomenal,
I would say more than any soap opera story since Luke and Laura. Though presenting
Luke and Noah realistically will anger some homophobes (see above comments), it they
continue to dumb down and neuter Luke and Noah, all the new fans will abandon the
show and all the buzz will be lost, hence back to the bottom of the ratings pile.
Will they shoot themselves in the foot just to placate some bigots who cringe at
a gay kiss? It makes no business sense.
I don't have anything against liking gays. But I don't think showing them kissing
on public television is the way to go. If you decide to show them kissing or a bedroom
seen, I would not watch As The World Turns.... Too me watching that breaks my heart t
o think that they have to live a life as such and should be kept very private.
