ELBOW TO FOLLOW MERCURY WINNER WITH CHILDREN'S ALBUM

Elbow will follow their Mercury prize-winning album The Seldom Seen Kid with a collection of children's music and an accompanying film.

The Mancunian quintet have seen their album sales skyrocket since beating the competition of the Last Shadow Puppets, Radiohead and the enigmatic Burial to take the prestigious award.

And while work on the band's fifth album is likely to begin shortly, before the UK and European tour in October and November, singer Guy Garvey has revealed that a children's record will be recorded alongside it.

"We initially thought that it would be great to make music for children because the lads in the band have got kids and they were saying how little really decent music for children there is. The more that we thought about it the more that we liked the idea," he told Billboard.biz.

"We've quite often been up for having songs on children's animated films, but we thought that it would be great to actually be at the starting point for that process."

Garvey explained that Jeff Wayne's 1978 concept album War of the Worlds had been an inspiration for the project, which the band hope will "really fires kids' imaginations".

"I thinking that's it going to be something to do with flying [in] dreams," he added.

"It's got to be something that not only works for us, but that works for the kids and when it's read to them that they can get into.

"That's what I love about it. It's the most honest thing that we could do right now."

Since their Mercury win, sales of Elbow's The Seldom Seen Kid have increased by 688 per cent.
