DOUGLAS OVERSEES WEAPONS DEBATE
Hollywood legend MICHAEL DOUGLAS is using his celebrity status to help rid the world of nuclear weapons.
The actor chaired a debate between experts at the Italian embassy in Washington D.C. earlier this week (beg18May09), and used the occasion to question whether U.S. President Barack Obama is addressing the issue.
Robert Gallucci, a former U.S. diplomat who was chief negotiator during the nuclear crisis with North Korea in 1994, told the forum recent talks between the United States and Russia show promise - but there is still concern over the threat of nuclear terrorism.
Douglas has supported the sponsors of the event, the Ploughshares Fund - dedicated to a nuclear weapons-free world - since becoming a member of its board of directors in 2005.
