DEPARDIEU TO RECEIVE CAREER HONOUR

French actor GERARD DEPARDIEU is to be honoured at the Film Society of the Lincoln Center in New York. The Green Card star, who was recently accused of headbutting an Italian photographer, will be praised for his contribution to American cinema next month (Aug07). Twenty of his films, including his Academy Award-nominated movie Cyrano de Bergerac, will be shown during the festival which kicks off on 3 August. Kent Jones, associate director of programming at the Film Society of the Lincoln Center, says, "Depardieu's to European cinema in the 70s what Brando was to American cinema in the 50s. "He was able to connect to and represent the whole gamut of European males: tough guy, stud, intellectual, bourgeois, anarchic rebel, hedonist. "Doing this series now is not just saluting him, its saluting an era of moviegoing." Past honorees include Fred Astaire, Alfred Hitchcock, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Jack Lemmon, and Diane Keaton.
