Day-Lewis Receives Freedom Award
Actor DANIEL DAY-LEWIS has become the first Freeman of Ireland's County Wicklow, his adopted hometown.
The There Will Be Blood star was born in England but became an Irish citizen in 1993, seeking refuge in the hillside village of Annamoe.
And at a ceremony on Monday (27Apr09), officials recognised Day-Lewis' work in bringing attention to the country by presenting him with the first ever Freedom of County Wicklow as well as a sun disc statuette created by a local artist.
Day-Lewis told those gathered at in Rathnew, Wicklow he was deeply moved, insisting the honour had given him "one of the most poignant moments" of his life.
He says, "I have had many memorable days and great fortune in my life and this is one of the most memorable of them all. I'm just astonished that this blessing has been honoured on me."
