DAMON: '007 IS STUCK IN THE PAST'

MATT DAMON has dismissed comparisons between his spy character JASON BOURNE and English agent JAMES BOND, declaring 007 is stuck in the past. Damon made the outburst at the British premiere of his third Bourne movie, The Bourne Ultimatum, in London on Wednesday night (15Aug07). He says, "The Bond character will always be anchored in the 1960s and in the values of the 1960s. "Bond is an imperialist and a misogynist who kills people and laughs about it, and drinks Martinis and cracks jokes "Bourne is a serial monogamist whose girlfriend is dead and he does nothing but think about her. He doesn't have the support of gadgets and he feels guilty for what he has done. The characters are so fundamentally different they almost don't bear comparison." Damon's director Paul Greengrass adds, "The Bourne franchise is not about wearing Prada suits and looking at women coming out of the sea with bikinis on. It's about essence and truth, not frippery and surface."
