DALDRY PLANS THE HOURS OPERA
British movie director STEPHEN DALDRY has confirmed reports he is planning to stage an operatic version of his 2002 Academy Award-wining film THE HOURS.
Daldry is bringing the stage version of his other hit film, Billy Elliot, to Broadway later this year (08) and now wants to follow up the successful production with a musical version of The Hours.
The film - which picked up the Best Actress Oscar for Nicole Kidman's performance in 2003 - tells the story of three women, all connected by Virginia Woolf's classic novel Mrs Dalloway.
And Daldry insists he is determined to see the project through.
He tells the New York Daily News, "We thought about it (The Hours) as an opera. Seriously. Scott Rudin, the producer, is very keen on it becoming an opera. I'm serious about it."
And the moviemaker is looking forward to getting back to his theatrical roots.
He adds, "I'm not really a movie director. I've just done a couple of movies. I've always thought of myself as a theater director who's moonlighted a couple times. I much prefer theater; it's much more my home ground."
