CUTHBERT'S EX APOLOGISES FOR 'INAPPROPRIATE' REMARK

Shamed ice hockey star SEAN AVERY has apologised to his teammates and actress ELISHA CUTHBERT for apparently making an offensive comment about his former flame.
Avery was suspended from the NHL indefinitely after making a derogatory sexual reference to former 24 star Cuthbert before a Tuesday night (02Dec08) game in Calgary, Canada, where Cuthbert's new man Dion Phaneuf now plays ice hockey.
In an attempt to verbally attack Phaneuf during a pre-game interview, Dallas Stars ace Avery said, "I just want to comment on how it's become, like, a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about."
But in a new statement released to People.com on Wednesday (03Dec08), the athlete has expressed remorse for his comments, acknowledging how "hurtful" they were.
Avery says, "I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers as well as people I have been close with in the past.
"As many of you know, I like to mix it up on and off the ice from time to time, but understand that this time I took it too far.
"I should not have made those comments and I recognise that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were."
