CRUISE'S UNITED ARTISTS STRIKES DEAL WITH WGA

TOM CRUISE's movie studio has made a breakthrough with striking writers after agreeing a deal with the picketers to allow people to go back to work on feature films. United Artists, owned by the actor and his longtime partner Paula Wagner, managed to negotiate an interim deal with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) which will see the studio resume production on a number of their new projects. The deal is said to be similar to that of U.S. talkshow host David Letterman, who returned to the air earlier this week (ends04Jan08) after securing backing from the WGA. Neither party has confirmed the reports, but a formal announcement is expected to be made on Monday (07Jan08), according to industry publication the Daily Variety. However, the deal does not include moviehouse MGM - the majority owner of United Artists. The WGA members have been on strike over royalties since November (07).
