CRONENBERG: 'I HAVE NOT SOLD OUT'
Director DAVID CRONENBERG has hit back at accusations he has quit making serious films in favour of commercial success. The 64-year-old had his first major box office hit with his 2005 adaptation of A History Of Violence - but many of his fans are worried he may have abandoned his 'anti-establishment' roots. However, Cronenberg insists he will never sell out for a big pay cheque. He says, "I just make movies that intrigue and interest me - if I was really going to go mainstream, I'd make Spider-Man 4. Then you have a built-in audience, a budget of something outrageous like $200 million (GBP400 million) , you don't get any creative freedom but you get paid a lot of money and you're guaranteed a huge success. That's mainstream."
