CONNERY CHAMPIONS COMPATRIOT ON COURT

Former JAMES BOND star SIR SEAN CONNERY almost scuppered his countryman's chances of winning at Wimbledon after calling the tennis ace at three o'clock in the morning to wish him well. Scottish tennis protege ANDY MURRAY faced one of the biggest matches of his career on Saturday (01JUL06) when he met US star ANDY RODDICK in the third round at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London. But his decisive victory could have been put in jeopardy by Connery, had the 19-year-old answered his early hours call. Murray says, "I got woken up at 3am by a call from an unknown number, so I didn't answer. "When I got up, there were three messages. The last at 3am was Sean Connery calling from the Bahamas. There's nothing cooler than being woken up by James Bond."
