The Stone Roses were always confident their self-titled debut album - which was released 20 years ago this week - would propel them to super-stardom.

The Stone Roses always "knew" they would be "massive".

It has been 20 years since the 'Waterfall' hitmakers released their critically-acclaimed self-titled debut album - one of the first successful records of the 'Madchester' scene - and former bassist Mani insists the group always knew the record would change their lives.

The musician - who now performs with Primal Scream - said: "It has tremendously well crafted songs, great recording and it struck a note with people, strangely enough. It changed a lot of people's lives, least of all our own.

"Even before we made it, we knew it was going to be massive. We knew the power that those songs held. And we knew that with a bit of magic dust in the studio, it was going to be an immense piece of music we used to get ct for being arrogant bit we knew no-one else was writing songs like that at that time

"It's a signature album of a time of great change in the world and we were spearheading the new guard."

Despite his confidence in the record, Mani admits that one of its key points took little crafting to perfect.

He said: "The outtro to 'I Am The Resurrection' - the album closer and what an ending! A great song followed by one of the best pay-offs of all time. The end section was recorded live in one take by me, John Squire on guitar and Reni on the drums. Simply stunning."
