CONDUCTOR VARVISO DIES

Swiss opera conductor SILVIO VARVISO died in hospital in Antwerp, Belgium yesterday (01NOV06) following a brief illness. He was 82. Born in 1924 in Switzerland, Varviso studied music under famous Austrian conductor CLEMENS KRAUSS, making his debut performance conducting WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART's THE MAGIC FLUTE at the age of just 20. Varviso's made his final appearance in September (06), conducting PUCCINI's TOSCA.
