COMBO DVD-BLU-RAY PACKAGES CLIMB SALES CHARTS

The strategy by many studios to offer as part of its home-video packages both a standard DVD and a Blu-ray disc got a new lift last week when Disney's newly restored Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs debuted at the top of the national video sales chart with most of the sales represented by the combo configuration. Studio executives have reasoned that many people are buying the combo versions of newly released movies because they have not yet made the transition to high-definition TV but are planning to do so in the not-distant future. The $40.00 "Diamond Edition" also includes video games, a look at the original storyboards, and a six-minute trailer for Disney's upcoming The Princess and the Frog. (Although Snow White is being released as the "70th Anniversary Edition" of Disney's first feature-length animated movie, it actually first appeared in theaters in 1937 -- 72 years ago.) Among rentals, Sony's Year One debuted in first place, according to Home Media magazine. It pushed Paramount/DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens to second place.
