COLDPLAY RETURN TO LIVE CIRCUIT WITH FREE BRIXTON SHOW

Coldplay have marked their return to live performance with a free concert for competition winners at London's Brixton Academy.

The south London show at the 5,000 capacity venue included a mixture of old favourites and tracks from their new album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, which was released on Thursday June 12th.

The band's fourth album hit the number one spot on Sunday despite having only been sale for three days and sold an amazing 302,000 copies in that time.

The gig, broadcast live on BBC Radio 1, kicked off with the new album's opening track Life in Technicolour before the foursome segued into last single Violet Hill and previous hits Clocks and In My Place.

Prior to Viva La Vida - which recently made the news after Brooklyn band Creaking Boards claimed the song had the same melody as one of their own - Coldplay frontman Chris Martin paused to explain the motive of the iTunes commercial song.

"We were in Germany the other day and an interviewer said to us 'what does an English person do when they've won the World Cup and the European Championships? Turn off their Playstation'," he explained.

"We said that's true but we've written this song which you sing when you know you're going to lose… to get yourself through."

A mix of new material and older tracks followed before Martin introduced "something super extra double special" as drummer Will Champion took lead vocals for a cover of the Pogues' If I Should Fall From Grace With God.

And as a triumphant encore, the band played Fix You before red, white and blue paper butterflies showered over the crowd during Lovers In Japan.

Coldplay's Brixton Academy set list was as follows:

Life in Technicolor
Violet Hill
Clocks
In My Place
Viva La Vida
Chinese Sleep Chant
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face
42
Square One
Trouble
Lost!
Strawberry Swing
Yellow
If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Encore:
Fix You
Lovers In Japan
